Canada on the big ships. This thought was forever in his young mind. At the age of 14 years he didsuccessfully stowaway in the hold of a ship(name unknown). This shipbrought him to the promised land of Canada in 1889.
Upon arriving in Montreal, Quebec, he began looking for a job. That yearthere was a demand for labourers by the Canadian National Railway. Hedid get work, an assortment of jobs, sometimes for room and board as pay. He worked his way to Manitoba by
working for farmers, bush work, loggingand also on the railroad. He eventually became a section foreman for theC.N.R..
At sometime during his work in Dauphin, he heard of land aplenty north ofDauphin. He bought the north-west quarter of Section 12, Township 29,Range 19W, in the early 1900's in what became the
Mowat School District, near Fork River. He continued working on therailroad during the week and on the farm on week-ends. His first housewas a log cabin which he and his brother Tom built. It was replaced by aframe structure a few years later.
He married Marion Beatrice Hafenbrak in 1907. He was a section foremanthen and they lived in Laurier, McCreary and Winnipegosis. At Fork Riverthey lived on the farm, eventually leaving the railroad to farm full time, where the family of seven children
grew. All the children went tothe Mowat School.
Mrs. Richardson passed away in 1920. Mr. Richardson never married again. He raised his young family with the help from relatives and hired help.Mr Richardson lived on the same farm until he retired. He did all the field work with horsepower. They were hard
times, especially in the"dirty 30's". There must have been a lot of bare cupboards in those days. With a garden, wild berries and wild game the farmers made it through thehard times.
Mr Richardson sold his farm to his son Bert after World War II. Hethen bought a small acerage beside the Fork River and built a two-roomframe house with the help from sons James and Bert. That was his homeuntil he died in 1953.
Mr Richardson was "Uncle Jack" to the young people who grew up in the20's and 30's, from Winnipegosis, Fork River and the Mowat districts.Anyone who attended dances in those days will always remembering himcalling the square dances.
