Karl and Elizabeth Hager arrived in Canada from Ashley, North Dakota onApril 5, 1914 with three children, Elizabeth, Mary and Bertha. Theystarted a homestead in Horsham, Saskatchewan. After their arrival in Canada they stayed with Mr. & Mrs. Gottlieb
Zimmermann, a sister andbrother-in-law of Elizabeth. Karl and Elizabeth built a sod house onthe homestead, which was later used as a barn. Later in the fall, a tworoom sod house was built.Afew years later, a kitchen of lumber was added to the sod house.
Our kitchen had a dirt floor, which was redone everySaturday with a mixture of water and dirt, put on with a brush and leftto dry. We burned hose and cow chips in the stoves for heat and cookingduring the day, leaving the coal for the night.
then came the digging of the rocks to get the land ready for breaking. We only had five horses and one cow. the cow supplied us with milk, creamand butter. As luck would have it our cow ate some poison and died. After that we had to walk to the
Zimmermann's for milk. Two years later, in1916, abarn was built, which in recent years has been moved to the HenryFischer farm.
Green Corn School was built in 1915. One of the first teachers was PaulTrout, he boarded with us. Elizabeth, Mary, Bertha and Rose got theirfirst schooling in this school.
Karl did carpenter work and custom grain threshing. He was the SundaySchool Teacher for the Baprist Church in Burstall and Neuburg Churchsouth of Horsham. He also made coffins.
The 1918 flu will long be remembered, as a lot of people were very sickand quite a few died. Whoever was able helped neighbors with chores, andKarl was one of those.
Karl rented out our farmin Horsham in 1922, and rented some land nearBurstall for 5 years - the Steinhauer and Stuhlmiller farms. In the fallof 1922, our family moved to Burstall on the Steinhauer farm, 1 mile west of Burstall. Dad farmed there for 5
years.
