Samuel Boyd was born in 1782 in County Armagh, Ireland, and was convertedfrom the Presbyterian Church to the Methodist Church in 1809 along withhis whole family, 11 in number. In 1817, his parents died. In 1819, the rest of the family came to Canada,
residing for two years in Wellseytown. From there, Samuel and his brother John and three sisters moved toLanark Township. He there met and married Ann Pool. In 1857 he movedwith his family to Elma Township. (Information from Obituaries from Ontario's

In 1854 John Wesley Boyd put a down payment on Consession 6 Lots 18 & 19.He spent the next 11 years working on this land. By 1866 he had clearedsixty acres, had a crop and a log house on Lot 19 and thus met the criteria foro his purchase. Alexander William
Boyd, John's brother, livedand helped on the farm from 1861 to 1871. John and his wife Emily weremembers of the Methodist Church. Wesley was a trustee and steward of thechurch from its beginnings until 1910, when he was obliged to stop because of his loss
of eyesight. In 1010, with his eyesightdeteriorating, John sold the farm to his son, John Wesley Jr. and he andhis wife moved to Atwood.
