Joseph (Josef) Ittermann was baptized into the Evangelical Luthern
Joseph (Josef) Ittermann was baptized into the Evangelical LuthernCongreation soon after his birth. He was baptized as an adult andaccepted into the Neudorf Baptist Congregation on June 1, 1891 by Pastor L. Lehmann. He married Anna-Catherine Kelm, nee
Renz on June 30, 1903.Joseph was a good bricklayer but he was also a great musician.
His name shows up on the 1915 Expropriation Lists as owning 4desiantines of land (about 16 acres). He returned to Volhynia and wasreported to be in Solodryi in about 1934 where spoke at a wedding. He was arrested about that time for his activities as a
Christian. Hedisappeared and was never heard from again.

It is this church that German interest in music received its highestexpression. In addition to its singing choir and "Pasaunerchor" (brasschoir) it had a choir of stringed instruments. In June 1908 the area Baptists held a "Posaunenfest" (Brass Band
Festival" in Neudorf withJoseph Ittermann directing. There were over 5,000 in attendance. It wassuch a sucess that another festival was held shortly thereafter inSorotschin. The occasion drew together approximately eighty-five brass players from Sorotschin, Horoschek and Rudkowski Futter. The directorwas again Joseph Ittermann.
Joseph Ittermann studied music professionaly in Germany, composed hisowon music and developed a reputation for being very precise, orderly anddemanding. He travelled all over the Union, including Siberia, conducting training classes for song directors and
band leaders. In addition toJoseph Ittermann, David Goertz (Gorz) was a director od several choralgroups in Neudorf. I has been said that the instruments from one of thebands was buried on the church grounds under a tree so that the communists wouldn't get
them.
The Neudorf Church was one of about a dozen large churches whosemembership extended to other villages. Smaller congregations inneighboring villages became preaching points or Bethauser (Prayer Chapels). In addition, there were house churches. In various
times in itshistory, Neudorf had as many as thirty stations.
New information received from Don Miller, (retired Baptist Pastor andTour Leader for for Tours to the Ukraine in search of information abouttheir families.) that the KGB files had been opened up in Zhitomir.
and provided the following information.
Josef Ittermann, baptist leader of orchestra, wife Katherina, born 1874.father Michael, relativr Magdalena Burgshether, lived with them. Arrestedtwo times. 1st time May 21, 1834. Accused of spreading fascist propaganda in Neudorf under Article 54-10, also
for having connections with Germany.In addition, he contacted the German Consulate in Kiev. He had fivebrothers who immigrated to US before his arrest, also two brothers andone sister who moved to Germany before the revolution, but sentence was suspended.
He was arrested the 2nd time January 8, 1935 for havingconnections with Pastor Goetz and Pastor Schmidgall. He spread moneyreceived from Goetz among the colonists, spread Fascist propaganda and corresponded with foreigners. He has a very respected father,
a teacherand farmer. On January 10th 1935, his documents were sent to the KGB. TheKGB asked higher authorities to send him and his family to Siberia forthree years of hard labor at the Belomer-White Sea Canal. They agreed. On March 21, 1935, his case was
stopped due to insufficient evidence.Sentence was suspended, with the warning that if there was an infractionof the law, he would be sent away. Was set free, but his fate is unknown.It appears he was sent to the gulag anyway. Or executed.
The above confirmed by my visit to the Ukraine in May 2003. Have a copyof his trial and interrogation and sentence. He was collecting money tobuy food to give to the starving people of his congregation during the enforced famine. He was a leader and elder
of the baptists in the Neudorfarea that were working on the collective farms.
