George Samuel Shannon came west in 1895 on a harvest excursion and found
George Samuel Shannon came west in 1895 on a harvest excursion and foundwork in the Gladstone and Neepawa area. In 1896 he got together withJack Robertson and came to the Dauphin area in search of a homestead. In this they were successful and George's
quarter-section was on the eastside of the Mossey River, the NW quarter of Section 18, Township 29,Range 18W. George went back east and in April 1897 brought his wife andand son Norman to Manitoba.
It was a wild country in those days, mostly bush and small meadows, withno roads or bridges. Mrs Shannon took the children to school across theriver by horseback or by boat. The Mossey River was always considered a treacherous river to cross at any time.
Later the family moved to thewest side of the River, to SE 13-29-19, which was only a mile from theschool. Lila and Anna both went to high school in Mowat. Quite often theteacher boarded at the Shannon home. Some years later, after Wes Shannon married
Mary Reid, a Mowat School Teacher, the Shannon's moved back tothe east side of the Mossey River.
