He was the son of Johann Hermann Joseph Barlage and Maria Anna Polle. Herman-Josef Barlage was baptized on 12 January 1839 at St Bartolomäus, Essen, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany; Herman Rump Maria Catharina Polle witnesses.2 He began military service in 1859 at 1866 wars against Austria; Served in the Oldenburger Infantry Regiment #91 from 1859 to 1862. In 1866 he participated in the battle marches of the Main (river/region) army. He was also involved on 24.7.1866 in the battles of Werbach and Hochhausen as well as on 25.7.1866 in Gerchsheim and 27.7.1966 near Würzburg. He received the medal of the Remembrance of 1866 which was made out of captured canon bronze.3 He ended military service in 1867; This is a guess as others where discharged on 30.4.1867. Apparently participants of the Main-army battles of 1866 where credited 2 months and seven days extra service of their committment.3 He married Maria Agnes Heidjanns on 17 July 1877 at Cloppenburg, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany; After the marriage they lived in a Heuerhaus on Nadorst in Essen.4 Herman-Josef Barlage was described as This was the time Josef worked at his aunt's Nadorst farm just outside of the village of Essen to try to help out there. His father made out his will and simply assumed Josef would then inherit the Nadorst farm, but aunt Adelheid left it to the 3rd son of her brother Joseph. This was Franz and apparently he got the property because he was her God-child. In 1878 at Nadorst, Essen, Amt Löningen, Oldenburg, Germany.5 Herman-Josef Barlage witnessed the baptism of Anna Josefine Bernardine Barlage on 22 April 1879 at St Bartolomäus, Essen, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany; Joseph Barlage Bernadine Markus, nee Foet. Herman-Josef Barlage died on 17 March 1880 at Essen, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany, at age 41; Died of stomach trouble as per Essen im WW.

Later, when she bought the store, she still was called the above name by the customers.1 Her married name was Lisette Barlage. She was born on 27 September 1845 at Brokstreet, Essen, Amt Cloppenburg, Großherzogtum Oldenburg, DEU.2 She married Herman-Josef Barlage, son of Johann Hermann Joseph Barlage and Maria Anna Polle, on 17 July 1877 at Cloppenburg, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany; After the marriage they lived in a Heuerhaus on Nadorst in Essen.3 Maria Agnes Heidjanns was employed by 5 months after her son was born the husband died. Lisette went back to work for her aunt Bernadine Koopman circa 1880 at Koopman's store, Mühlenstrasse 11, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany.3 She was This date the store was sold in bankruptcy and Lisette bought the place. This place was sold around 1900 and a move to the Muehlenstrasse enlarged the business as a fine bakery. On 18 March 1882 at Auf dem Hook, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany.4 She was A wedding party picture still shows 'Oma Barlage' in advanced age. In 1912 at Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Germany.5
