Bertha and her mother came to America in 1872. In 1877 they moved to Alabama. Funeral services were held at the German Baptist Church.

5. Melvin Morlan Schmersey Sr. * 1925, Marion, Kansas 66861,10 Road Maintenance Worker, ¥ Helen ?, * about 1928. Melvin died 13 Feb 1990, Santa Clara, California, lives bis 1990, Cupertino, California. He attended school in Marion, Kan., and served in Army artillery units in England, France and Belgium during WWII. He was employed at Santa Clara County publics work and in the county transportation agency for 27 years. He specialized in trimming trees, for which he was nicknamed "Doc". He was a tireless volunteer for the YMCA. He died of a stroke in a Santa Clara hospital where he was being treated for a heart ailment.
