Emil was drafted by the Russian army to fight in Zackalin (near Japan)around 1891. The trip took one year out and one year back, and he wasthere for four years (for a total of 6 years). In 1905, the Russians drafted him again to fight against Japan. He escaped to Germany to avoidgoing and stayed there for more than a year. The family sold the farmand wanted to join him. However, the war ended and the Russians declaredamnesty to "deserters" so he returned and served a brief jail term. In 1914 Emil was drafted again and fought for the Russians against Austria.
