The present compilation
is a courageous attempt to satisfy an important general demand for a good
overview of all Danube- Swabian home town books, local histories and family
books of places. Overall they can be very helpful for the genealogically
interested, since in the cited works - also of course in the family books
of places - particulars about the colonists and population of a place can
be found.
Places from all the
regions of Danube-Swabian settlement are listed, as are places to which
they fled or were expelled. Listings are in alphabetical order according
to their p r e s e n t - d a y n a m e s . An earlier,
usually German, name is also listed. In parenthesis in most cases can be
found the number of German inhabitants just prior to the Second World War.
In addition all the variant place names in accordance with their changing
histories are interspersed throughout; these refer one back to the present-day
official names, which have been selected (following the lead of the second
edition of Donauschwäbisches Ortsnamenbuch by Regenyi and Scherer,
see below). Before each place name is also listed its country code
and national postal (ZIP) code, when available.
